What Is Hands Across Australia

Want to win $15,000 prize money for your school?

GenerationOne has partnered again with the Australian School of Performing Arts to raise awareness and get young Australians actively involved in the initiative to end Indigenous disparity in one generation – this generation. GenerationOne is all about the future and all about education; what better place to grow this movement than in our schools?

Hands Across Australia

Hands Across Australia is GenerationOne’s catchy theme song, and this song is the catalyst for the GenerationOne Hands Across Australia School Competition. This year, we have two categories you can enter.

If you would like to perform Hands Across Australia in its original format, you can enter the Outstanding Performance category. You simply need to learn Hands Across Australia, come up with a short rap section about Indigenous disparity, and submit a film clip of your school group performing it. It’s an easy song to learn, and all the resources you need are available on this website, including sheet music, and a practice track where you can sing along with the Australian Girls Choir.

If you would really like to let your creative juices flow, you can enter the Creative Interpretation category. Use Hands Across Australia as your inspiration, and write your own song (in any style) that keeps the theme of Indigenous disparity (and your solutions to ending it!). Film your school performing it, and submit your film clip.

Each category winner will receive $15,000 for their school.

Each entry will also automatically be entered into the People's Choice Award.

Schools entering the competition are encouraged to utilise existing partnerships or establish new ones to create their entry. You could partner with other departments in your school, members of your local community, Indigenous elders, or with another school on the other side of the road, or the other side of the country! Take the opening lines of Hands Across Australia as your inspiration:

“If you help me and I help you, think of all the things that we could do”

Classroom Resources

Every school in Australia has received a DVD with some additional resources for teachers. We hope the activities, including the ‘Blackfella/Whitefella’ dance, will assist you to prepare your entry and incorporate the theme of Indigenous disparity in to you classroom. All of these resources are also available on this page here

Entries close Friday 23 September 2011, so get moving!
